With the start of the new year, I’ve been thinking about going back to using fitness products at home. This year, a new article appeared on my radar, the Lululemon Mirror. After trying the company’s padded jacket, I decided to give it a try.
The Canadian company is not sending review units to the media at the moment, but did offer to go test the device at its Toronto store in the morning before it opened. So that’s what I did. One morning at 9am, I took the streetcar into downtown Toronto and headed to the Lululemon location on Queen Street West.
Once I got in and put on a more appropriate training outfit, a Mirror expert walked me through some of the key features of the device.
What is the mirror?
It’s basically a smart mirror with a built-in screen, speakers, and a webcam.
The total price of the Lululemon Mirror is usually $ 1895, but right now, it is on sale for $ 1,495. Even for sale, this is a tough price to swallow, considering this is a mirror and not actual fitness equipment. That said, it does have a nice build and is a sleek looking mirror, but it’s not specifically designed for working out like a treadmill, for example.
However, I will not criticize the construction after spending a morning with the mirror. It looks like a well designed product. The built-in display performed much better than I expected and featured good contrast and color. I wasn’t watching movies on it, obviously, but for what it was, it worked fine. It also offers wide viewing angles, so more than one person could easily use it at the same time.
When you are training, you will see a video of your coach that you can follow along with other statistics related to your training. If you’re using a compatible fitness tracker, like an Apple Watch for example, you can also connect it to keep track of your body metrics.
The Mirror also has a pair of speakers that are reasonably loud but don’t sound very good. Like the display, they do their job perfectly, but I wouldn’t use this device as a Bluetooth speaker.
Finally, the mirror features a perforated webcam along the top edge like several modern smartphones. Again, I couldn’t delve into the specs of the webcam, but when you join a live training class, it allows you to appear on screen with the rest of the class.
Along with Mirror, you must also run the software through a connected app and you must pay for a subscription that costs $ 50 per month and requires a minimum one-year commitment. So Mirror’s already ridiculous $ 2,000 price tag is closer to $ 2,600.
If you have the money to burn you will not be disappointed. There are tons of features in the app, the exercise classes are well produced, and there are tons of them. You can even try them out with a free two-week trial by signing up for the All-Access Mirror Challenge on the Lululemon website.
Let’s try to analyze this
When you take a step back, there are definitely several advantages to consider. This is a convenient way to add a home exercise space to a bedroom as it sits along a wall and is not as bulky as a treadmill or stationary bike.
The Lululemon Mirror also works well as the screen is nice, the speakers are loud, and there are tons of exercise classes that are taught well. Seriously, you could write a separate full article in-app only.
Lululemon is taking this Mirror smart home training program seriously and has already invested $ 500 million in the purchase of the Mirror platform. And when you’re using it, the experience feels very premium. It easily competes with the production and prestige of Apple and Peleton, but of course you still have to consider the cost.
This device is extremely expensive. This is especially true when you can get similar features with a $ 13 Apple Fitness + subscription and an Apple Watch that costs about $ 500 or you can get a Peleton bike for around $ 2,000 and a $ 16 per month subscription.
That said, if you have the money, I don’t think you will be disappointed by Lululemon Mirror.
