According to Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña, the worst of the incident began around 9:15 p.m., when the crowd of approximately 50,000 concert goers began to move to the front of the stage.

According to him, this caused some panic and resulted in some injuries.

“The crowd began to compress towards the front of the stage, and that caused some panic, and started causing some injuries,” said Fire Chief Peña. “People started fighting, losing consciousness and that generated additional panic.”

In total, 17 people were transferred to hospitals, eleven of whom suffered cardiac arrest. According to the fire chief, 8 people were declared dead.

At the event, which drew thousands of people, 300 people were treated for minor injuries such as cuts and bruises.

Investigators were sent to hospitals Saturday morning to try to identify the victims. The Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine how the eight people died at the Astroworld music festival.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner called for calm, saying people shouldn’t jump to conclusions about what caused the crowd to rise.

“I think it’s very important that none of us speculate,” he said. Nobody has all the answers tonight.

According to the event’s website, Travis Scott’s third annual Astroworld Festival was scheduled to run Friday through Saturday.

Saturday’s event has been canceled following the mass casualty incident.

Travis Scott, a well-known rapper and event organizer, launched the Astroworld Festival in 2018. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was canceled, like most other major events, in 2020.
