1) FaceTime and SharePlay
For the first time in Apple’s history, Apple allows Android and Windows users to join FaceTime calls. Non-Apple users cannot initiate a new call, they simply join the web link using their browser. If you want to schedule a FaceTime call, you can integrate Calendar.
FaceTime now comes with a new grid view layout where we can see all the people on the same side tiles. If you’re running a macOS with an M1 chip, you can blur your background on your FaceTime call.
The SharePlay function is designed to watch movies or Apple TV together with your family and friends. If you were planning to watch a movie with your friends but can’t come home due to this pandemic, then you can FaceTime your friends and watch the movie together. Other participants in a call can sync the playback and the volume is automatically adjusted so you can talk and watch at the same time.
To make the user experience even better, FaceTime supports spatial audio. This makes the individual voices of the participants sound as if they are coming from the directions that person is located in the FaceTime call grid.
A new speech isolation feature comes with minimal background noise which is useful for concentrating more on your voice. When you try to speak and your microphone is muted, FaceTime will let you know that you have turned it off.
With screen sharing, you can choose whether you want to share a particular application or you want to share the entire screen. This feature is ideal while sharing your screen with your co-workers.
2) Messages – shared with you
The “Shared with you” function in the messaging application separates the content that you have received in the messages and places it within the relevant applications. If someone shares Apple Music, it will go within the Apple Music application and if someone shares a link to a website, they will go to the Safari browser and it will be displayed within the “Shared with you” section.
This feature applies to content from Photos app, Safari browser, Apple news, Apple podcasts, and Apple TC apps. In all the listed apps you can find a section shared with me and by clicking on that particular shared thing you can navigate to a particular person’s message app and reply to it directly.
3) App shortcuts
The shortcut app was first introduced on iPhone and iPad, now available for macOS as well. So you can access all your favorite shortcuts. There is a Mac specific shortcut that is available in the Gallery or you can create your own.
We can run shortcuts from the Dock, Finder, the menu bar or also using Siri. These shortcuts are universal, as if you have created them from your iPhone, you can also access them through your mac.
4) Universal control
One of the most useful features of macOS Monterey. Allows you to use a single control on multiple devices. For example, if you have an iPad and a MacBook pro, you can use your MacBook’s mouse, trackpad, and keyboard to control your iPad.
You can also drag and drop content from one device to another. The universal control function does not need any previous configuration, it works automatically when there are 2 Apple devices next to each other.
5) Notes with a quick note
There is a new quick note feature for jotting down a quick note no matter what you are doing. Just place your cursor at the bottom of the screen and a note icon will appear. By clicking on that icon, you can add a quick note. That quick note will be saved within a dedicated folder in a note app. Sticky notes are also universally accessible.
The Maps app added new roads, trees, and featured buildings. It is limited to major cities such as San Francisco, London, New York, and Los Angeles.
The new 3D view experience also added an internal maps app that shows the best momentum 3D view like the Golden Gate Bridge. You can pin your route and Apple has improved the search results as well. Apple redesigned the place cards within maps and added more details about user and company profiles.
7) Focus mode
In macOS Monterey, Apple introduced focus mode. It is a custom version of Do Not Disturb. It helps to focus on what you are doing in the current moment and to block out another distraction.
For example, you can set “work” mode to block notifications from non-work related applications, helping you to focus more on your current work. Some built-in focus modes are Drive, Sleep, and you can create your custom focus mode.
If you have enabled focus mode and someone tried to message you, you will be notified that your notifications are muted. If you set the focus mode on your iPhone, it will automatically sync with your other devices.
8) Live text
One amazing feature of the current version of macOS is live text. With this function, you can select or copy text from the images you have captured. You can copy text from a photo and paste it into another application you want. Live Text works with handwritten and typed text. It also supports URLs, mobile phone numbers and emails, and more. One can tap the phone number and get the interface to call or text that person.
