foodpanda launches pilot project for food delivery by ‘Pandafly’ drones

foodpanda, Pakistan’s leading food delivery company and also the country’s leading e-commerce platform as a whole, today launched a pilot project to test food delivery via custom drone. Conducted in association with the Deputy Commissioner’s Islamabad office, the test flight of the drone, called pandafly, took place at the F-9 Park Islamabad.

A food package weighing approximately 2.5 kg was pulled from a restaurant at one end of the park by a foodpanda pilot and loaded into the drone’s storage bag. The drone then delivered the package to the other end of the park, where it was picked up by another cyclist and distributed to the Sweet Homes guest children for the occasion.

The use of disruptive technology by foodpanda in the future will mean faster deliveries over longer distances. Other customers living in peri-urban and remote areas will especially benefit as they have limited options of food outlets in their local area and with drone delivery they will also be able to order food in major urban centers. The last mile of drone delivery will be completed by a foodpanda pilot. It should also be noted that this is the first commercial drone of its kind made in Pakistan for this purpose and therefore foodpanda is supporting

local technology development.
Speaking on the occasion of the pilot launch, Nauman Sikandar Mirza, the CEO of foodpanda stated, “The core spirit of foodpanda is to constantly innovate, push boundaries and leverage technology to find excellent solutions to meet people’s changing needs. Before we begin actual drone deliveries for our clients, there are still many aspects that need to be thoroughly assessed and closed, including technical, operational and legal matters, and we are aggressively addressing all of these. Today’s successful test flight and delivery has been very encouraging and shows that we are on the right flight path! “

Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Hamza Shafqaat and his office worked closely with foodpanda for the pilot project and DC was also the keynote guest at the launch event. Expressing his views, he said:

“E-commerce and using technology to serve citizens is definitely the future, and Islamabad’s civil administration is committed to supporting anyone who takes the initiative to provide greater convenience and facilities for the public. We wish foodpanda all the best in turning this pilot project into a regular operational service now. “

The launch event was also attended by dignitaries, media representatives, some celebrities and social media influencers.
